IN A LINCOLN STATE OF MIND...

Two of my picks for satisfying your curiosity about Abraham Lincoln:

David Herbert Donald's "Lincoln" is a well-written, nicely-researched bio that runs 600 pages but packs in a lot of insight as well as surprises like how often "Abraham" was mispelled when he was elected, and how the Civil War brought out the best (and worst) in Lincoln as a politician, statesman, and, ultimately, martyr.

James Swanson's "Manhunt: The 12-Day Hunt for Lincoln's Killers" reads like a thriller but details the frantic, unprecedented effort to bring the plotters to justice. Some surprising heroes and villains. Trust me, this story wasn't covered in any history course you ever took!
